Irma Skjöth – with soul in every stitch

04 June 2025
Fashion designer Irma Skjöth grew up in Helsingborg, where her passion for style and form took root at an early age. With a Master’s degree from The Swedish School of Textiles and experience as a designer in Paris, she has cultivated a distinct creative voice grounded in sustainability, craftsmanship and the art of reimagining. Using pre-loved Stenströms garments, Irma breathes new life into the old through thoughtful re-design, preserving the heritage while renewing the expression. We visit her in her studio to get a glimpse into the project and explore how she has reinterpreted our past pieces into a light, Summer-inspired mini collection.

Hi Irma, it's such a pleasure to visit your studio! How would you describe yourself?
– I would describe myself as an aesthete and a creative multi-talent. I’m curious, full of ideas, a romantic who sees possibilities and solutions in most things.

Tell us about your journey as a designer.
– I grew up in a very creative environment that encouraged different forms of expression and in many ways, I’ve always worked with design. I studied at The Swedish School of Textiles in Borås where I earned a Master’s degree in Fashion Design and after graduating I worked in Paris as a designer in the world of high fashion. Today, I create my own collections using vintage textiles, while also freelancing as a designer and creative consultant.

You work a lot with re-design. How did that become your path?
– I’ve always loved old things. Textiles and garments that carry history often have a higher level of craftsmanship and material quality, which I truly appreciate. As a child, I often altered my own clothes, and that evolved during my design studies where I regularly used secondhand materials and vintage garments as references. For the past few years, I’ve worked exclusively with reused materials in my collections. It feels good for the soul to work with what already exists and see it transformed and appreciated in a new way.

You reached out to us at Stenströms – what sparked your interest in our brand?
– My grandfather often wore Stenströms shirts, which I later inherited, and ever since, the shirt has been my favorite garment. In a previous project I worked specifically with Stenströms shirts, and that gave me the idea to go deeper and develop a collection using materials from the brand. I see many parallels with my own approach where quality, craftsmanship and heritage are central.

Can you tell us more about what you’ve created in this project and your inspiration?
– I’ve created a capsule resort collection based on garments from earlier Stenströms collections. Inspired by the Scandinavian Summer, I wanted to design a youthful collection that complements the classic shirt. The pieces draw heavily from shirt details, but have been softened through organic cuts, draping and tie elements that allow them to be worn in various ways.

How do you envision these garments being worn?
– The idea was to create an effortless Summer collection that can be styled in many different ways and seen as a complement to the shirt wardrobe. The garments can be worn with or without the shirt, together or separately, and are designed to be mixed and matched across the collection.

What does fashion mean to you?
– For me, fashion is a way to express feelings and identity. It’s a form of expression that holds history, reflects the present, and hints at the future, allowing us to communicate without words.

What are your thoughts on the future of fashion – in terms of both design and sustainability?
– My hope is that fashion becomes more mindful. In recent years, we’ve seen a shift where sustainability is taking up more space. I hope this continues to grow and that craftsmanship, quality and textile knowledge move into the spotlight.

I draw a lot of inspiration from materials, my family, nature, the sea, surroundings, and light. I like to think of it as everyday beauty. Small things we often take for granted, but that bring depth, meaning and inspiration to life.

– Irma Skjöth

What are some simple steps you’d recommend for someone wanting to start reusing or re-designing their clothes?
– I’d suggest starting simple. Take a garment from your wardrobe that you no longer wear, something damaged or that you’re not afraid to experiment with. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Let the mistakes guide the process. Often, it’s those mistakes that lead to the most creative solutions.

What is your dream project?
– Any project where I can fully express myself through design and storytelling is a dream project, and this project with Stenströms has definitely been one of those, allowing me the freedom to merge design and visual storytelling. I also work a lot with digital marketing and sales, which is amazing because it connects me with people from all over the world. But one of my dreams is to create a physical space for collaboration, creativity, meeting clients and expanding my creative universe.
