Viscose & Lyocell

Gentle on skin    Airy feel    Drape    Cellulosic

Viscose and lyocell are man-made fibers that are both produced from cellulose-based raw materials. Fabric made from these materials drapes beautifully and with its cool and silky properties, the comfort level is high. Within this group of cellulose-based materials, there are a number of different types of fibers and brand names, depending on the raw material being used and the production method. When possible, we choose to use the more environmentally friendly alternatives Lenzing™ Ecovero™ and Tencel™.

About viscose

Did you know that viscose is sometimes called artificial silk? The material was developed at the end of the 19th century as a more affordable alternative to silk. Viscose is the oldest man-made fiber and is today the most commonly used within the group of cellulose-based materials, or regenerated fiber as they are also called. Like the name implies, regenerated fibers are artificial, transformed from plant cellulose into textile viscose fibers through a chemical process. The wood pulp used usually comes from spruce or pine, but other trees or cotton waste can also be used as raw material.

Lenzing™ Ecovero™ are viscose fibers that come from certified wood raw material where the pulp originates from responsible forestry. The manufacturing process for Lenzing™ Ecovero™ is also more environmentally friendly and the production of the fibers generates up to 50% less emissions and water consumption than conventional viscose.

About lyocell

Lyocell was first used in the 1990s and was developed as a more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional viscose. The pulp used comes from eucalyptus trees or other fast-growing sorts of wood. Tencel™ is often used, which is a brand name for lyocell made from FSC-certified wood raw material that originates from responsible forestry.

In a closed production system, the pulp is converted into cellulose fibers, with high resource efficiency and low climate footprint. The manufacturing process is circular, where 99% of the water and the degradable chemicals, are being reused. The material is, when used in its natural form, compostable and biodegradable.
